Parents are needed on a regular basis as chaperones and/or drivers for monthly events as well as the EDGE one day summer mission trip and the week long Life Teen mission trip.  Adult Leaders, including Parents and drivers, must be VIRTUS Compliant (approved through Virtus training, background check, having received and read the booklet on Preventing Sexual Abuse, and be up to date on monthly training modules). Adults who volunteer to drive must complete and submit the Volunteer Driver Form. Parents may also become youth ministry leaders.

The Annual Theology of the Body retreat held each spring for 8th grade students of IHM Parish and their 8th grade friends only. This year it will be held at the Potter’s Ranch Retreat in Union on Saturday, April 22nd and 23rd. The retreat begins on Saturday at 6pm. On Sunday, we will travel back to IHM for the 6:00pm mass in which you and your family are invited to attend. The retreat closing after mass will last approximately a half hour.

So what is Theology of the Body? It is program created by St. Pope John Paul II that teaches students about love…loving themselves, their bodies and how to treat others with love. For the IHM students, TOB is taught in 7th and for the RAP evening students, this program is taught in 8th grade. Retreat leaders consist of adults, high school students and trained Theology of the Body leaders. The retreat is a culminating event that brings the program full circle and helps to emphasize to our teens that they are worthy of respect, honor and love.  It is important for youth to know this, especially before leaving junior high and moving on to their high school. The retreat is not only informative and prayerful but it is fun with icebreakers, food, social time, bonfire, scavenger hunt, small and large groups and praise and worship. The retreat center is set on a beautiful 430 acre center with cedar log cabins. It will be one of the last times the students will share a special moment together before they split to go to their respective high schools.

Please encourage your child to attend this highly recommended retreat for your 8th grade student. Cost of the retreat is only $40 and includes one night lodging, retreat t-shirt, snacks, drinks, dinner, breakfast and lunch. Deadline to turn in money, t-shirt size and Form A permission slip (can be downloaded off IHM website under Faith Formation, then youth ministry and is with this letter) is Wednesday, April 12th.

To help with meals and/or transportation from the retreat center back to IHM for mass and the closing or for more questions, please contact Karen Gutzeit at kgutzeit@ihm-ky.org.

Annual summer mission trip to the mountains of Kentucky (Pikeville, Ky.) held on Monday, June 26th through Friday, June 30th. This mission trip is for current 8th graders through graduating seniors as well as Virtus trained young adults and adults. This year, St. Pius Parish will be joining us so the sooner your child sends in their nonrefundable deposit of $50, the better. Once spots are filled, paperwork will go out. We ask that you send in the deposit in an envelope with the youth’s name, your name, address, and cell numbers of both you and your child. We are always looking for Virtus trained adults to go with us, either skilled or unskilled. Each worksite has a skilled and unskilled adult as well as between 8-10 youth. Your duties are to encourage, guide and support these youth as well as work alongside of them and help transport them to and from worksites and to and from Pikeville (gas money is given to you for this). Activities include building handicap ramps, painting and repairing as well as yard work. It is a wonderful and rewarding trip where youth get to meet who they are helping and gain an understanding of what poor really is. Cost of the trip is $180 which includes mission trip t-shirt, 4 nights at the lodging, transportation, all meals, snacks and drinks, evening fun activities and Friday’s fun outing before we return home. Meeting time at IHM on Monday is 8am. and approximate arrival time home is around 5pm. on Friday. There will be bake sale fundraiser after all masses on June 3rd and 4th which is mandatory to work and a mandatory parent/student meeting on Sunday, June 25th.

National Catholic Youth Conference held in Indianapolis on Thursday, November 16- Saturday, November 18. This conference that brings in 20,000 catholic high school students is for this year’s current 8th -11th grade students. This is a unique experience where youth can meet to other youth from across the United States. During the day, youth chose which session that they would like to attend according to their interests. In the evening, youth attend concerts, listen to national speakers, and celebrate mass with 20,000 other youth, and hundreds of priests, nuns and bishops. It is a great way for them to experience the universal Catholic Church and see that the catholic faith is alive in our youth. Cost of this conference is $498 but we realize that this is costly. We are asking several organizations to help defray the cost so we can bring the cost down to $400. In July and August, we will be doing two fundraisers to try to bring the cost down even more. Payments and forms are due to Karen Gutzeit as follows: April 24: forms and $100 per person, May 27: $100 per person, June 26: $100 per person and July 24th: $100 per person. Packets with forms are located on the table outside Karen Gutzeit’s office door in the back of the gathering space.
